GUINEA BISSAU’S PRESIDENT SHOT DEAD

Guinea Bissau’s president Bernando Viera has been killed in military putsch by a group of soldiers loyal to country’s chief of Army staff that was killed few hours earlier in a rocket attack

The spokesman for the country’s military says President Viera was shot dead when he tried to flee. The President’s assassination is thought to be a revenge attack after the army chief of staff died in an explosion a few hours earlier

The army denies there’s a coup and the capital Bissau is said to be quiet. Guinea Bissau is one of the world’s poorest states. It has a history of coups and has become a major transit route for smuggling cocaine to Europe

President Bernando Viera who has ruled the country intermittently since 1980 only last November survived an assassination attempt; his house was largely destroyed in the assault and later looted by soldiers, an eyewitness told the BBC
