SUDAN’S PRESIDENT STOPS DISTRIBUTION OF AID TO DARFUR

Indicted President of Sudan, Hassan Omar El Bashir has ordered a stop to the distribution of relief materials in the Western part of the country; directly targeting relief efforts in the war-ravaged Darfur region

President Bashir said any aid organization wishing to bring relief materials into Darfur would only be allowed to deliver the materials at the country’s airport; from where Sudanese authorities are expected to take over.

In the wake of his indictment by the International Court of Justice on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity, President Bashir had expelled over a dozen aid groups. The UN says at least one million people are now at risk of hunger, famine and starvation in Darfur with the suspension of aid to the region

International groups say 300,000 people have been killed in the 6 year old conflict and 3 million displaced. Although Sudan’s government denies this claim saying the figures are exaggerated.
