MANDELA’S FOUNDATION CALLS FOR GLOBAL ACTION


The Nelson Mandela Foundation proposed on Monday n global “Mandela Day” for July 18 to help inspire people to improve lives within their communities. “This celebration of Nelson Mandela’s life will serve as a global call to action for people to recognise their individual power to make an imprint and help change the world around them for the better,” it said in a statement.

mandela1The day would commemorate the birthday of Mandela, 90, an international icon and former South African president who led the country out of apartheid in 1994.

The foundation, and 46664, Mandela’s AIDS awareness charity, said the Mandela Day campaign would call upon people around the world to spend 67 minutes to help change the world around them. Mandela first started campaigning for human rights in 1942, 67 years ago.

“We would be honoured if such a day can serve to bring together people around the world to fight poverty and promote peace and reconciliation,” a statement issued on Mandela’s behalf said.
